Living in Brighton, Boston

Chestnut Hill Reservoir's mile-and-a-half loop, a National Register-listed reservation built around a former drinking-water basin, draws walkers and runners along its paved path at Brighton's southern edge. Boston College's campus rises on the hill just beyond the reservoir, and Brighton Center's shops and restaurants fill the blocks around the intersection of Washington Street and Chestnut Hill Avenue a short distance north. Boston Landing, a redeveloped rail yard turned office and retail complex, has brought practice facilities for the Boston Bruins and Celtics along with several restaurants to the neighborhood's eastern edge. Boston Medical Center – Brighton, renamed from St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in 2025, anchors another stretch of Brighton with a full-service hospital campus. The Green Line's C branch begins at Cleveland Circle on Brighton's western edge, and the B branch runs along Commonwealth Avenue through the neighborhood's northern half toward Boston College.

Brighton's rental stock leans heavily toward large apartment complexes and multi-family houses, and Boston College's campus nearby keeps demand and turnover high each fall, so anyone hoping for a single-family house here has fewer options than in the city's quieter neighborhoods.

An early loop around the reservoir, a coffee in Brighton Center, and a walk through Boston Landing's plaza past the Bruins' practice rink make for an ordinary morning that touches three very different parts of Brighton's identity.
