Living in Dorchester, Boston

Fields Corner's Vietnamese groceries, bakeries, and restaurants fill several blocks around Dorchester Avenue and Adams Street, a commercial strip the American Planning Association once named among the country's great neighborhoods. Savin Hill Park's rocky outcrop looks out over Dorchester Bay, and Malibu Beach's small stretch of sand sits just below it, a short walk from the water for residents of the surrounding streets. The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum stands at the tip of Columbia Point, its glass pavilion facing the harbor a couple of miles south of Fields Corner. Peabody Square, restored around the Ashmont Red Line terminus, holds cafes and shops at the neighborhood's southern edge, with Victorian houses climbing the hill above it. The Red Line runs the length of Dorchester along two branches, with Savin Hill, Fields Corner, Shawmut, and Ashmont stations giving most of the neighborhood a direct ride downtown.

Dorchester spans six square miles of very different blocks, so a safety rating or a restaurant recommendation for one corner of the neighborhood often says little about a street a mile away.

A walk along Savin Hill's shoreline path, a bowl of pho in Fields Corner, and an afternoon at the JFK Library's harborside plaza show three distinct sides of a neighborhood too large to sum up in a single visit.
