VFW Parkway carries traffic through the neighborhood's suburban core, lined with single-family houses on larger lots than most of the city allows, and Centre Street's shops and restaurants fill the commercial strip near West Roxbury's Parkway district. Stony Brook Reservation's northern reaches spill into the neighborhood's southern edge, adding another stretch of woods to a neighborhood already thick with green space. Bellevue Hill, the highest natural point in Boston proper, rises along the border with Roslindale.
Centre Street's shops cluster within a few blocks, but many of West Roxbury's residential streets sit a considerable walk from that strip, distances that push daily errands toward a car for anyone not living nearby.
A morning loop around Millennium Park, an afternoon among Brook Farm's stone foundations, and dinner on Centre Street give West Roxbury's low-key, suburban character its full range within a single day.
