Living in Oak Forest/Garden Oaks, Houston

White Oak Bayou runs along T.C. Jester Boulevard, the shared boundary between Garden Oaks and Oak Forest, and T.C. Jester Park lines its banks with trails, ball fields, and a public pool that give both neighborhoods a common recreational anchor. Garden Oaks was platted in the 1930s with curving streets and no curbs at all, a design choice that traded the standard grid for a country-like feel and left roadside ditches to handle drainage instead. Oak Forest, on the other side of the boulevard, follows a more conventional layout of wide, grassy esplanades running down several of its main streets, planted with mature trees that have grown well past the height of the ranch homes underneath them. Both neighborhoods share a reputation for affordability relative to the inner loop, drawing a steady mix of longtime owners and other households to a blend of original homes and larger rebuilds.

Without curbs to carry it away, a hard rain can leave Garden Oaks' roadside ditches holding standing water at the curb for a stretch, a minor holdover from the neighborhood's original design.

Mature trees and a slower street grid tie Garden Oaks and Oak Forest together more than any shared commercial strip does, with T.C. Jester's trails and pool serving as the one recreational anchor both sides of the boulevard use in common.
