Living in Spring Branch, Houston

Long Point Road carries one of Houston's most varied dining strips through the heart of Spring Branch, its storefronts holding restaurants representing cuisines from several continents alongside taquerias, bakeries, and family-run grocers. Ranch houses from the 1950s and 60s fill most of the surrounding blocks, unpolished compared to some inner-loop neighborhoods but priced well below them, which has long made Spring Branch a landing spot for households seeking space without inner-loop rents. Spring Branch Independent School District operates its own campuses throughout the area, separate from Houston ISD, adding a layer of local governance distinct from much of the surrounding city. Apartment complexes fill in around the single-family blocks, extending that affordability to renters as well as homeowners, and mature trees planted decades ago now shade many of the older streets between them.

Much of Spring Branch's apartment stock dates to the same postwar decades as the houses around it, and not every complex has been kept up to the same standard.

A weeknight dinner along Long Point can turn into a tour through several different cuisines without leaving Spring Branch, one of the clearest payoffs of the neighborhood's unpolished, budget-friendly character.
