Living in Los Feliz, Los Angeles

Central LA
cafesparkshistoricyoungdog friendly

Los Feliz sits directly below Griffith Park, and that proximity shapes daily life here more than any single business on Vermont Avenue — a resident can be on a trail toward the observatory in less time than it'd take to find parking somewhere else in the city. Vermont and Hillhurst carry the neighborhood's cafes, bookstores, and revival-house cinema, and the hillside blocks above them hold some of LA's better-preserved 1920s architecture, Spanish revival and Tudor homes tucked behind hedges and old sycamores that shade the sidewalks well into the afternoon. The park itself adds miles of trail beyond the observatory grounds, including quieter routes locals favor over the busier tourist paths.

Transit doesn't reach into Los Feliz directly, so the park access and the walkable village core come without a subway line to lean on — most trips, even short ones, still start with a car and a search for street parking near the village strip.

Los Feliz works best for someone who'd rather walk to a bookstore than drive to one, with a mountain park a few blocks past it — the one thing missing from that picture is a train.
