Living in Crown Heights, New York

Brooklyn

Crown Heights spreads out along Eastern Parkway, a broad boulevard designed with the same landscape-architecture pedigree as Prospect Park, and brownstone rows branch off it in every direction. The Brooklyn Children's Museum sits within the neighborhood, one of the borough's long-running cultural institutions, and Brower Park nearby adds a smaller green space away from the Eastern Parkway corridor. Caribbean food and culture run deep here, visible in roti shops, record stores, and the annual parade route that follows the parkway itself, alongside restaurants and bars that have opened along Franklin and Nostrand Avenues.

The 2, 3, 4, 5, and S trains give the neighborhood strong express access into Manhattan, and rents remain relatively affordable compared with brownstone Brooklyn closer to the park. The neighborhood is in the middle of real change — modern condo buildings sit next to century-old rowhouses block by block, so the character can shift noticeably from one corner to the next.

It fits people who want brownstone architecture, express-train access, and a strong food scene at relatively affordable rent, and who don't mind a neighborhood still finding its settled shape — plenty of character, not yet uniform.
