Living in Greenpoint, New York

Brooklyn

Greenpoint's Polish heritage still shows in its bakeries, delis, and the onion-domed church that anchors the neighborhood's skyline, even as contemporary coffee shops and restaurants have filled in around them. McGolrick Park anchors the neighborhood's interior with a historic shelter pavilion and a regular farmers market, a quieter counterpart to the busier waterfront parks a few blocks west. The waterfront along the East River gives some of the best unobstructed Manhattan skyline views in Brooklyn, with an esplanade and park space that stays notably calmer than the crowds a mile south in Williamsburg.

The G train is the only direct subway line serving the neighborhood, which makes it slower to reach than its neighbor to the south — a transfer is usually required to get into Manhattan, so trip times run longer than the map distance suggests. Low-rise blocks and a slower pace define most of the interior streets, a contrast with the density just over the Williamsburg line.

It fits people who want waterfront views and a quieter, more residential Brooklyn pace, and who don't mind planning around a single subway line — a trade of convenience for calm.
