Living in Hayes Valley, San Francisco

Patricia's Green fills a wedge of Octavia Boulevard with a lawn, public art, and a carousel-turned-cafe, land that sat under the elevated Central Freeway until the earthquake-damaged structure was torn down in stages between the early 1990s and 2003. The park takes its name from Patricia Walkup, a longtime neighborhood activist who helped lead the campaign to remove the freeway and reconnect Hayes Valley's street grid. Boutiques and restaurants have filled in the blocks around the park steadily since, turning Hayes Street into a compact shopping corridor a short walk from the War Memorial Opera House and Davies Symphony Hall at Civic Center. Victorian storefronts mixed with newer infill buildings give the neighborhood a denser, more finished feel today than the freeway-shadowed blocks that preceded it. Muni Metro's J, K, L, M, and N lines all pass through the nearby Van Ness Station, putting most of the city's rail network within an easy walk of Hayes Valley.

Hayes Street's popularity means weekend sidewalks and restaurant waits that can run long, and the neighborhood's safety rating sits a notch below its calmer immediate neighbors.

Hayes Valley's transformation from freeway underpass to walkable retail strip remains its defining story, one residents and shop owners alike still measure the neighborhood against two decades later.
