Living in Adams Morgan, Washington DC

Eighteenth Street's restaurant and bar strip has anchored Adams Morgan since well before the neighborhood's namesake festival began in 1978; Adams Morgan Day now ranks as the city's longest-running neighborhood celebration, drawing crowds each September. Madam's Organ has served live blues and soul food from the same corner of 18th Street since 1992, one of a dense cluster of bars and restaurants that keep the strip busy most nights of the week. Rowhouses and low-rise apartment buildings fill the hillier blocks around the commercial strip, sloping down toward Rock Creek Park. Adams Morgan has no Metro station of its own; the Duke Ellington Bridge carries 18th Street across Rock Creek to the Woodley Park station, and residents either walk that bridge, take a bus, or head the other direction toward Columbia Heights for a train.

That rail gap is a genuine daily trade-off, not a minor inconvenience, and weekend nights bring bar crowds and noise along 18th Street that spill into the surrounding residential blocks.

Adams Morgan's safety rating actually ranks among the better ones in this part of the city — proof that going without a Metro stop hasn't kept it from being one of the most in-demand strips in Northwest Washington.
