Living in H Street NE, Washington DC

The Atlas Performing Arts Center gave the "Atlas District" its name when a shuttered 1938 movie theater, closed since the 1970s, reopened as a nonprofit arts venue in the mid-2000s, one of the anchors that helped revive a corridor that sat largely boarded up after the 1968 riots. H Street's blocks now hold one of the city's densest concentrations of bars and restaurants, spilling out of rowhouse storefronts most nights of the week, with Union Market's food hall and shops a walkable stretch north across the railyard. The DC Streetcar ran the length of H Street and Benning Road starting in 2016, but the District shut the line down for good on March 31, 2026, after years of low ridership, and dedicated bus lanes now carry Metrobus service along the same route in its place.

That leaves H Street without a rail line of its own; the NoMa-Gallaudet and Union Station Metro stations each sit close to a mile away, walkable but not quick, and H Street's safety rating sits below Capitol Hill's just to the south, with the same late-night bar crowd that revived the corridor keeping these blocks loud well past midnight on weekends.

H Street's nightlife corridor came back years before its rail line ever did, and now that the streetcar is gone too, the same bars and restaurants that revived these blocks are the reason people still make the walk in from the nearest Metro.
