Living in Uptown, Dallas

The free M-Line trolley threads Uptown's core, rattling past the high-rises and patio bars that make this Dallas's most walkable pocket north of downtown. McKinney Avenue anchors the restaurant and nightlife scene with a dense run of patios, wine bars, and late-night kitchens, while the Katy Trail's northern stretch gives runners and cyclists a paved escape from traffic along Cedar Springs Road. With four DART lines converging just south at the West End, getting anywhere else in the city rarely requires much planning.

That density and easy transit access come at a price — literally: one-bedrooms here sit among the highest in the city, a premium for walking to dinner instead of driving to it. Parking garages and valet stands are as much a part of the streetscape as the trolley tracks, a reminder of how much the neighborhood still bends toward cars even while marketing itself as pedestrian-friendly.

Uptown asks for Dallas's steepest rent in exchange for skipping the car some nights — a trade that shows up in smaller square footage but pays off every time the trolley rattles by on the way to dinner.
