Living in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles

Eastside
diversehistoricaffordablerestaurants

Boyle Heights carries some of the deepest roots on the Eastside — Mariachi Plaza has served as a gathering point for musicians for generations, and the surrounding streets are lined with bakeries, taco stands, and family-run restaurants that reflect that long history, hillside homes overlooking downtown just beyond the commercial blocks. The E Line light rail runs through the neighborhood, connecting it to downtown and westward toward Santa Monica without a car needed for that leg of the trip, and murals along the main commercial blocks trace the neighborhood's history in color and detail.

Rent sits among the lowest anywhere on this list, a real advantage alongside the historic character and rail access on offer, though it comes with a more built-up, industrial edge in the stretches away from the main commercial blocks.

Boyle Heights isn't a neighborhood that changed overnight to fit a new audience — the same plaza, the same panaderias, and the same rhythm have carried through, with the E Line now running past them and a new generation still gathering at the same corners.
