Living in Echo Park, Los Angeles

Echo Park Lake gives the neighborhood its center of gravity — palm trees, paddle boats, and a lotus bed that draws people down to the water on weekend mornings, with the downtown skyline rising just beyond it. Sunset Boulevard cuts through the neighborhood's music venues, taco counters, and galleries, and the hills above the lake climb toward Elysian Park and Dodger Stadium, close enough that game nights change the traffic pattern on nearby streets and fill the curbs early. Older bungalows line the hillside blocks set back from the boulevard.

The neighborhood's arts-and-nightlife energy is genuine, and it shows up hardest around parking: street spots near the lake and the busier restaurant blocks disappear fast once the sun goes down, pushing plenty of visitors up onto the surrounding residential hills to look for a spot on busier weekend nights.

That's the calculus of living here — a lakefront park and a walkable strip of bars and taquerias, in exchange for circling the block once or twice most weekend nights to park near either one, a small tax on an otherwise easy walk.
