Living in Inner Sunset, San Francisco

Ninth Avenue and Irving Street form the commercial heart of Inner Sunset, a restaurant row of ramen shops, brunch spots, and neighborhood bars that draws visitors from across the city despite sitting several miles from downtown. UCSF's Parnassus campus climbs the neighborhood's southern edge, its hospital towers and research buildings forming one of the city's largest employers and giving Inner Sunset a steady daytime population of students, faculty, and medical staff. Golden Gate Park's eastern meadows and the de Young Museum sit just a few blocks north, close enough that a walk to the park's tennis courts, the Japanese Tea Garden, or the Academy of Sciences is a routine errand rather than an outing. The N Judah line runs the length of Irving Street, giving Inner Sunset a direct rail connection downtown that most of the neighborhoods farther out in the Sunset District don't share.

Fog rolls in off the ocean most afternoons, even when downtown stays sunny, and Inner Sunset's temperatures run several degrees cooler than neighborhoods on the other side of Twin Peaks for much of the year.

The N Judah gives Inner Sunset something most of the Sunset District doesn't have: a direct line downtown, anchoring a quieter, fog-cooled address built around a university campus, a well-used stretch of park, and a safety rating in the city's upper tier.
