Living in Outer Sunset, San Francisco

Ocean Beach runs the full length of Outer Sunset's western edge, a wide, wind-scoured stretch of sand backed by the Great Highway that draws surfers, dog-walkers, and sunset-watchers even on the neighborhood's foggiest days. Fog rolls in off the Pacific most afternoons and can linger for days at a stretch, giving Outer Sunset a noticeably cooler, greyer climate than neighborhoods just a few miles east across Twin Peaks. Rows of pastel-painted houses fill the neighborhood's quiet grid, built up steadily through the early and mid-twentieth century on what was once open sand dunes, with garages and small front yards replacing the front stoops common in denser parts of the city. Taraval and Judah Streets carry small, low-key commercial strips through the grid, serving a slower-paced crowd than the restaurant rows closer to downtown.

The N Judah runs the length of Judah Street across the district's northern blocks to its Ocean Beach terminus, and the L Taraval does the same along Taraval to the south, though mid-district blocks around Noriega sit a solid walk from either line and lean on the Sunset Boulevard buses instead.

What Outer Sunset trades away in convenience, it makes up in space, affordability, and a beach at the end of the block — a quiet, foggy corner of the city where rents run lower and safety ratings run higher than almost anywhere else.
