The Spreckels Mansion has stood at 2080 Washington Street since sugar magnate Adolph Spreckels built it in the early 1900s, one of several grand houses that give Pacific Heights its mansion-row reputation along the ridge's best-view blocks. Alta Plaza Park and Lafayette Park bookend the neighborhood with a combined twenty-four acres of lawns, tennis courts, and dog-walking paths, both landscaped over former sand dunes into formal city parks by the early twentieth century. Fillmore Street carries the neighborhood's shopping south of Pacific Avenue, its boutiques and restaurants running downhill toward the flatter blocks of Japantown and the Western Addition. No BART or Muni Metro rail line reaches Pacific Heights; residents rely on buses climbing the hill from Fillmore or Van Ness, or a walk down to Cow Hollow, for anything closer to a train.

The neighborhood's steep cross streets keep some of the city's best bay views on offer, but those same grades make a walk home from Fillmore Street's shops a genuine uphill haul on the blocks closest to the ridge.
