Living in Beacon Hill, Seattle
SouthJefferson Park spreads across more than fifty acres at the top of the ridge, an Olmsted-designed golf course that opened in 1915 and was renamed in 2024 for Bill Wright, who learned the game there before winning the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in 1959, the first Black golfer to take a national USGA title. El Centro de la Raza occupies the former Beacon Hill School building near the ridge's northern end, a civil-rights institution born from a 1972 building occupation that now runs cultural and social-service programs from the same site. Beacon Avenue South carries the neighborhood's business strip along the spine of the ridge, its restaurants and shops overlooking skyline views that stretch from downtown to Mount Rainier on clear days. The Beacon Hill Link station sits along Beacon Avenue South, putting the 1 Line within reach of the ridge's houses and connecting the neighborhood to the stadiums, downtown, and the airport.
The ridge's side streets run steep enough to slow a walk to the station, and a rental on one of Beacon Hill's western slopes means a climb home after nearly every errand.
Golf at Jefferson Park and dinner along Beacon Avenue give the ridge its own rhythm, one that keeps plenty of residents from needing much reason to leave it.
