Living in Mount Baker, Seattle

Mount Baker Park slopes down a ravine boulevard toward Lake Washington, connecting to Colman Park and the Mount Baker Bathing Beach, where a roped-off swimming area and a diving board draw crowds through the summer under lifeguard watch. Craftsman houses climb the hillside above the park in tidy rows, many built in the early 1900s as the neighborhood grew into one of the city's earlier residential enclaves along the lake. Picnic areas and tennis courts fill the park's lower reaches near the beach, with a playground renovated in 2016 drawing families down from the hillside streets above. The Link's Mount Baker Station rises above Rainier Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, connecting the 1 Line to Columbia City one stop south and Beacon Hill one stop north.

Rainier Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Way both cut through the neighborhood as major arterials, and traffic on the two streets can make the walk down to the beach from the hillside houses a noisy one, especially near the elevated station.

Mount Baker splits its attention between the lake at the bottom of the hill and the rail line above it, and residents tend to lean one way or the other: toward the bathing beach and the ravine trails below, or toward a quick ride on the 1 Line into Columbia City or downtown.
