Living in Downtown, Seattle

Downtown & Core

Pike Place Market's fish stalls, produce stands, and the original Starbucks storefront pack a nine-acre historic district overlooking the waterfront, with vendors selling flowers and crafts inside the market's covered arcades. Fifth Avenue carries the retail core's department stores and boutiques a few blocks east, and the Seattle Art Museum anchors First Avenue with a collection spanning several continents. Benaroya Hall, home to the Seattle Symphony, sits a few blocks north among the office towers and hotels that make up downtown's commercial core. The waterfront runs along Alaskan Way, where the Seattle Aquarium's exhibits and the Seattle Great Wheel on Pier 57 look out over Elliott Bay. Both the Link's 1 Line and 2 Line stop at multiple downtown stations, connecting the neighborhood to the airport, the University District, and the Eastside.

Pike Place Market's arcades stay packed with visitors through most of the day, and a table at a market restaurant without a wait is hard to find during peak hours.

A morning browsing the market's stalls, an afternoon inside the art museum, and a walk along the waterfront to the Ferris wheel make for a full day spent almost entirely on foot.
