NorthThe Fremont Troll crouches beneath the Aurora Bridge on North 36th Street, one hand clutching a Volkswagen Beetle, and the sculpture draws a steady flow of visitors climbing over it for photos. A few blocks south, the Fremont Bridge lifts open for boat traffic more often than any other drawbridge in the country, backing up North 34th Street's mix of breweries and cafes each time it rises. Fremont Brewing's taproom and picnic tables sit near the canal, one of several breweries that give the neighborhood's industrial blocks a social pull after work. A market fills the streets near the Center of the Universe signpost with vintage vendors and produce stalls on Sundays, and houseboats line the ship canal just north of the bridge.
The drawbridge that gives Fremont its social scene doubles as its main headache: anyone driving through during an opening can lose several minutes waiting for a boat to pass.
Fremont rewards an afternoon spent wandering rather than driving through, a look at the Troll, a walk along the canal past the houseboats, and a beer at one of the taprooms near the bridge before heading home.
