Living in Greenwood, Seattle

North
quietfamilyaffordablecafes

Greenwood Avenue North runs the length of the neighborhood's commercial spine, its storefronts holding thrift and vintage shops like Lucky Dog alongside Seattle ReCreative, a nonprofit supply store built from donated fabric, ceramics, and craft materials. Antique dealers and secondhand furniture stores fill several more storefronts along the avenue, drawing shoppers from across North Seattle for a deliberate, unhurried browse. Woodland Park Zoo sits just south along Phinney Ridge, its trails and animal exhibits a short walk or drive from most Greenwood addresses. Single-family houses on modest lots fill most of the residential blocks running east and west off the avenue, giving the neighborhood a settled, low-rise character built up gradually over the twentieth century.

Greenwood Avenue itself carries a steady flow of through-traffic connecting North Seattle to the neighborhoods further south, and crossing it on foot outside a marked intersection means a genuine wait for a gap in cars.

A morning spent working down the avenue's thrift and antique shops, followed by an afternoon at the zoo, fills a full day without much need to leave Greenwood's own stretch of the avenue.
