Living in Queen Anne, Seattle

Kerry Park's overlook frames one of the city's most-photographed views, the Space Needle rising in the foreground with downtown's skyline and Mount Rainier visible behind it on a clear day. The Space Needle itself, along with Chihuly Garden and Glass, sits at the base of the hill in Seattle Center, a campus of museums, theaters, and fountains that spills into lower Queen Anne's restaurants and bars. Queen Anne Avenue climbs from Seattle Center to the hill's residential summit, its business strip holding grocery stores, boutiques, and cafes serving the houses stacked along the surrounding streets. The hill's steep grades, among the steepest of any residential streets in the city, keep views open from nearly every cross street heading east toward downtown or west toward the Olympic Mountains.

Those same grades make walking or biking up from Seattle Center a genuine workout, and a wet sidewalk on the steeper blocks turns treacherous once winter rain sets in.

A morning at Kerry Park, an afternoon among Seattle Center's museums and fountains, and dinner along Queen Anne Avenue give a resident here a full day without leaving the hill and its base.

Sound Transit Link light rail lines that stop nearby — the colors match the 1 Line and 2 Line on the platform signs. Link is a spine reaching a slice of Seattle; most neighborhoods get around by bus instead, which we don't tag here.
