Discovery Park spreads across more than five hundred acres of bluffs, meadows, and forest in the peninsula's northwest corner, the city's largest park and a former Army post whose old parade grounds and barracks buildings remain along its central loop trail. The West Point Lighthouse marks the park's westernmost edge, an 1881 beacon reachable by a mile-long trail down to the beach, where driftwood and tide pools line two miles of protected shoreline. Magnolia Village serves as the neighborhood's commercial hub around West McGraw Street and 34th Avenue West, its blocks holding a bookstore, a French bakery, and a handful of boutiques and gift shops. Houses on generous lots fill most of Magnolia's residential streets, many with views west over Puget Sound toward the Olympic Mountains.

Only three bridges connect Magnolia to the rest of the city, and a closure or backup on any one of them can add a long detour to what is normally a short trip off the peninsula.

Discovery Park's trails and the shops of Magnolia Village give the neighborhood a self-sufficient feel, one residents lean on more than most given how few roads lead back to the rest of Seattle.
